LIVE UPDATES: Chinese Leader Kicks Off First State Visit to North Korea
Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived in Pyongyang on Thursday, kicking off his first state visit to North Korea, the CCTV broadcaster reported. Xi was invited by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The CCTV broadcaster reported that Xi is accompanied by his wife Peng Liyuan, by Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Ding Xuexiang, the general secretary of the Communist Party of China, and Yang Jiechi, the director of the Office of Foreign Affairs of the Communist Party of China.
The trip is the first official visit of a Chinese party and state leader to North Korea after a 14-year hiatus after Hu Jintao, the country's previous leader, visited Kim Jong Il in Pyongyang back in 2005. Xi previously visited North Korea in 2008 in his capacity as vice-premier.
The trip is timed to the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
