UN Logistics Center established in Uzbekistan to provide assistance to Afghanistan
In connection with the increased needs of Afghanistan for food aid, the UN is increasing stocks of essential goods in warehouses in Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The main logistics center was created in the Uzbek Termez, the UN News Center reports.
As indicated in the message, over the past days, the institutions of the Organization managed to successfully deliver humanitarian supplies to the provinces of Afghanistan, and on the eve of the convoy of the Refugee Directorate safely reached the eastern province of Nangarhar.
This is the second convoy in the last three weeks with help, proceeding to Afghanistan through the Pakistani border crossing "Torkham".
On the eve of the conference in Geneva, donor countries promised to allocate more than $ 1 billion for the needs of Afghans - almost twice as much as requested by the UN. It also became known that the radical Taliban movement, which has been the de facto power in Afghanistan for a month already, has undertaken in writing to provide conditions for the implementation of humanitarian operations.
The UN is now asking donors to provide the promised funds as soon as possible to purchase food, medical supplies and other essential goods for Afghans.
Earlier, Uzbekistan sent 1,300 tons of humanitarian aid to the Afghan province of Balkh - food, medicine and clothing. Taliban promised to distribute food, medicine and clothing brought from Uzbekistan to those in need in various Afghan provinces.
